My New Favorite Summer Drink

I've been trying to break my diet soda addiction for awhile now. I've noticed that I crave more sweets and fatty foods when I have it regularly––not good. So, out it must go.

Much as I love water, I sometimes crave something with a little more flavor to sip on in the evenings (aside from my green smoothie, of course!) when I'm doing homework, watching television, or geeking. Enter the following beverage (not really new, but new to me, and quite delightful):

1 part cranberry juice
1 part club soda

I've not been able to find plain old cranberry juice in the store near me, and it took me a fair bit of label reading in the supermarket aisle to find a "cranberry juice cocktail" that didn't have high fructose corn syrup (eek!). The brand I ended up with was Safeway's 100% Juice––it's sweetened with apple and some other kind of juice I can't remember right now. I've never been much of a juice drinker, so diluting it with the club soda cuts the sweetness, and has the added bonus of making it fizzy––a pretty good replacement for diet soda, I think!

UPDATE 7/10/08:
In an effort to eliminate my beverage purchases (I'm aiming for water, coffee, tea, and small amounts of juice), I realized that mixing cranberry juice with plain water (especially if it's icy-cold) will probably taste just as good. No more club soda for me!
